Element 2. Developing Your Plan

This step takes the vision which you created in the first step of the Structure for Support process, and embeds it into the framework of your life.

Once you have a clear vision of what you want your life to be about, you naturally will seek to bring into your life any number of things which are an expression of your vision.  Many of these may be in your life already.  New or old, however, it can be quite powerful to consciously choose -- ongoingly -- what you bring into your life.  This conscious choosing can transform something you currently grouse and complain about into something which you fully accept and embrace because it is completely aligned with the vision you now have for yourself and your life.

The Circle of Life

It is likely that you will see exciting possibilities far beyond what you are capable of taking on right away and at one time.  The challenge becomes one of choosing which of these possibilities you will actively engage in given the constraints of time.

Most Life Coaches use some version of the Circle of Life, which graphically shows your life divided into several categories such as financial, health, relationships, etc.

CIRCLE OF LIFE

circle of life

The advantage of using this tool is that it allows you to take into account the sometimes conflicting objectives inherent in life, so that:

  • you do not neglect or lose sight of important areas as you focus on other areas,
  • you identify activities and goals you've had that you don't really believe in
  • you set priorities, imagine mutually beneficial (win-win) scenarios, make rational choices and ultimately create a balance among the many alternatives.

Benefits of Creating a Plan

Not only will a plan allow you to address the important areas of your life and to strike a balance among them, it will also be a blueprint for the life you are creating, a document you can reference ongoingly:

  • to choose what steps or actions to take next
  • to ensure that you are meeting your objectives for the various areas of your life as you build it.

Equally important, as you achieve your goals, experience personal growth and deal with the circumstances of your life, your plan will keep everything in perspective, allowing you to select and incorporate new goals and objectives into the overall spectrum of your life.  You will find that you can manage your transitions more easily and will make more effective decisions.

Or said another way, your plan will be a powerful structure to support you in living a life you love.

How can you be truly happy if you know (consciously or unconsciously) that you are not pursuing what matters to you most?

"We met a few times...

...with you asking me questions. From the answers we developed a circle which encompassed all the areas of my life. As
we worked on this totality of myself, I got more excited. I could see possibility and connections that I could not before. I think most of all I could see areas of my life that I believed were being addressed but clearly were not."
